The Odyssey discovered a planet that was alive, its surface pulsing with a rhythm. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, her eyes on the viewscreen.

"Command, this is Vasquez. I've found a living planet."

"Copy, Odyssey. What do you mean?"

"It's a single organism. Vast, ancient, aware."

Kaelen appeared beside her. "It's a First Ones' creation. A world with a single consciousness."

"Can we communicate with it?"

"We can try."

Elena opened a channel. "This is Captain Vasquez of the alliance. We come in peace."

The planet pulsed, and a voice echoed in their minds.

"Welcome. I have been waiting for someone to find me."

"Why were you created?"

"To preserve life. The First Ones knew the Devourers would come. They created me to be a sanctuary."

"Can we help you?"

"You already have. By finding me. Now, I can rest."

The planet's pulse slowed, its light dimming.

"Command, the planet is entering a dormant state."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the living world, at the sacrifice it had made.

The universe was vast.

And full of mysteries.

The end.

The C-130 descended through gray clouds, the coast of America appearing below like a promise kept. Sergeant Mike Chen sat by the window, watching the land he hadn't seen in fourteen months grow closer, larger, more real.

Around him, his squad was quiet. Williams stared out the opposite window, Reyes fiddled with his backpack strap, Martinez slept. They'd been through three deployments together. This was the first time they were all going home.

The wheels touched down. The plane slowed. Men began gathering gear, checking pockets for letters, for photographs, for anything that connected them to the lives they'd left behind.

Mike stood, stretched, looked at his men. "Listen up. When we get off this plane, we're civilians. No saluting, no formations, no 'yes, sergeant.' You're going to see your families. You're going to hug them and you're going to let them take care of you. That's an order."

Williams grinned. "Best order you ever gave, Sarge."

The ramp lowered. Sunlight flooded the cabin. Outside, a crowd waited-families, friends, signs held high.

Mike walked down the ramp, duffel over his shoulder, into the noise, into the light, into the arms of a sister he hadn't seen since before the last deployment.

"Mike. Mike. You're home." She was crying, holding him, not letting go.

He held her back. "I'm home, Jenny. I'm home."

Around them, the tarmac was chaos-reunions, tears, laughter. Williams was lifted off his feet by a woman Mike assumed was his mother. Reyes held a toddler who stared at him like he was a ghost. Martinez fell to his knees, arms around two children.

Mike stood with his sister, watching his squad become civilians again.

"You look tired," Jenny said.

"I am."

"Come on. Mom's waiting at the house. She's been cooking for three days."

They walked toward the parking lot, toward the car, toward home. Mike looked back once, saw his squad scattering into the crowd, into their own lives, into the peace they'd earned.

He'd see them again. There would be reunions, phone calls, late nights remembering. But for now, there was only home.

He climbed into the car, let his sister drive, watched the familiar streets pass. The war was behind him. The men he'd fought with were safe. The life he'd left was waiting.

He closed his eyes, let the motion of the car carry him home.
